Hurricanes and books

The other day I dreamed that I was in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina and I was eating King cake, because I didn't want it all to go to waste in the flooding. I think this was because I recently finished a book called Zeitoun. Has anyone read it? I'm dying to know what others think of the book. It's a true story about a family during Hurricane Katrina. I won't give the story away, but basically I was shocked and embarrassed at how the main character was treated, in our country, just a few years ago. Also, I had no idea things were so bad during the hurricane. If I learned anything from the book and a few other books I've read recently it's that if the government tells you to get out, then I'm getting out. And at the first serious sign of political unrest, I'm getting out too. Then I thought, "how do you really know if it's safer to get out?" I figure that the prophet will probably tell us if anything is so dangerous that it's time for us to hit the road. So there you go, follow the prophet and take the cake with you, and here's a picture of Sammy.

I love the comment "Follow the prophet and take the cake with you."

Is that one of those books that makes you anxious and left feeling horrid? It got lots of five star reviews on Amazon, but I'm not sure I want to read it . . . .

Good question Katie, I thought the book was fascinating. I didn't feel horrid, but maybe a little anxious and very disappointed in how people handled the whole situation.

Just finished the book. All I can say is WOW! I know it is only one person's story, but what an awful way to be treated. BTW, thanks for all the book suggestions. I think I have read every one of them after you mentioned them. I just put the Henrietta Lacks one on hold at the library. Any other suggestions?
