We recently flew with our two boys, (11 months old and nearly 3 yrs old) from Louisiana to Oregon. I don't know if I'm incredibly brave or stupid; but wanting to get my family together had something to do with it. During all flights I kept thinking, "This is worth it, right? If we only do it once a year? Or maybe every other year?" Here are some things to consider the next time the travel bug bites me.
Benadryl doesn't work on my kids. Screaming for over an hour on the plane does. This is a tried and tested fact.
Don't take a toddler car seat on the plane. We thought Sammy would like having his car seat. Some sense of normalcy might help him sleep on the flight. Well the car seat didn't fit down the aisle. We were already on the plane, Matt was ahead of me with the car seat and a suit case, when he realized he had to use both hands to carry the car seat over his head to make it to our seats at the very back of the plane. So I had to push the suit case while carrying two big bags on my shoulders and Aaron in one arm. And Sammy in between me and the suitcase. It was incredibly awkward and cumbersome. Those rolling suitcases don't steer, well.
No matter how many toys I take, they won't play with them. I spent a lot of time and money coming up with great new toys that would fit nicely inside my diaper bag. Sammy played with all the toys for about 2-5 minutes each. The glow sticks were the biggest hit, they lasted 10 minutes. The bag full of snacks was barely used. And the iPad that Matt spent quite a bit of time uploading movies to, was a bust. Because all Sammy wanted on the flight was Netflix or YouTube.
This baby tent is awesome! It isn't really for flying but it's great for traveling. I bought this just before our trip, it weighs less than 5 lbs and packs up to fit in a suitcase. It is a MILLION times better than a pack n play, it's easier to set up, takes up less space and weighs less, and since it zips closed...kids can't crawl out! I will never use a pack n play again!
A harness is also awesome! I used to think these things were horrible...and then Sammy learned to walk. This worked great in the airport and at the beach
Despite the flying, the trip was a blast! Pics will be coming and hopefully we will do it again...in five years:)

I think we only flew twice with you children for a vacation. Once for Christmas when you were about 18 months old. The other was that time we all flew from PA.
It has gotten so much easier to fly the last couple of years. Now I don't mind having the kids with me at all.
Yikes--that was a bad one, aye? I don't miss the days of flying with tiny kids. Glad you had a good trip, nonetheless.
